Every airport, hotel, and conference Wi-Fi network is somebody else’s LAN. Anyone who set it up can see what you are doing, route your traffic through whatever they like, and quietly serve you a different version of any site they want.

Most of them are harmless. Some of them are not. You will never know which is which in the moment, and the cost of finding out is asymmetric: it costs nothing to encrypt and a great deal to be the example.

The other half of operator travel is the body. Long-haul flights are mild physiological assault. The protocols below cover both halves: privacy and physiology.

The risk is not "hacker in the lobby." The risk is misconfigured corporate routers, captive portals injecting trackers, and ISPs in jurisdictions you have not researched. Encryption sidesteps all three.

How

A litre of water before boarding. A litre during the flight. Skip the second espresso. Drink water at every meal, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Especially if you don’t feel thirsty.

Why

Cabin air sits at roughly 10% humidity, which is drier than most deserts. You are dehydrating faster than you realise, which is why you arrive feeling like a husk and assume it is jet lag. It is partly that. It is mostly water.

Run the VPN in your home country’s region while abroad. Banking apps stop flagging your sessions, your streaming subscriptions still work, your normal services don’t treat you as a stranger.

Why

Most "fraud detection" abroad is just IP geolocation. Half of operator travel headaches go away the moment your IP says you are home.

Hotel rooms are a hostile sleep environment by default: too warm, too bright, too loud, too tempting. You fix all four in the first five minutes or you fight them at 3am.
