$PANIC · Speculative Futures

Anxiety.

Short the panic. Long the breath. The futures market on your future is closed today.

Plain Version

Your brain is trying to predict and control too many things at once.

Anxiety is your threat-detection system running in the absence of an actual threat. It is well-meaning. It is also ridiculously over-funded right now, and it is funding itself by short-selling your sleep.

The way out is not to argue with it. The way out is to lower the volume in your body, then take one small concrete next step that proves the prediction wrong.

Speculative Panic Divestment

The Protocol

Step 1 · Body

Breathe slowly. Inhale 4. Exhale 8. Six rounds. Drop the shoulders. Unclench the jaw. The body has to come down before the brain will.

Step 2 · Senses

Name five things you can see. Four you can hear. Three you can touch. This pulls you out of the future and back into now.

Step 3 · Inputs

Reduce inputs. Phone face down. Tabs closed. Less noise.

Step 4 · One next step

Do one small concrete thing for ten minutes. Not the whole problem. Ten minutes of one piece of it. Then reassess.

Plain note

If anxiety is regularly stopping you from doing the things you want to do, this is bigger than a breathing exercise. Talk to a GP or a therapist. Treatments work. Asking for help is high-status behaviour. If you are in crisis, please contact a crisis line in your country.
